First, choose a style of calligraphy.

Before you purchase supplies, decide what style you are keen to explore. All styles have different tools and letter structures, so switching between some in the beginning can make practice confusing.

Flexible brush pens are used in modern brush calligraphy to create contrasting strokes. This style is a practical starting point for greeting cards, journals, and decorative quotes.

Copperplate is a pointed pen calligraphy, meaning it uses a nib and ink. You must pay close attention to pressure, slope, and consistent letter proportions.

Broad-edge calligraphy, such as Italic, is written with an angled broad nib to produce the characteristic strokes.

Arabic calligraphy has specific script traditions, tools and proportional systems. If you have such an interest, pick instructions fitting to the script you are interested in.

Easy Calligraphy Supplies for Beginners

You can get started with just a few pens. A small selection of suitable materials makes it easier to understand how your tool behaves.

Beginner brush calligraphy starts with:

- Brush pen with a manageable tip (single)
- Appropriate paper for that pen.
- Pencil and ruler for guidelines.
- Reference letter or practice sheet.

If you opt to do pointed-pen calligraphy, you’ll want a compatible nib, holder, ink and appropriate paper.

“Don’t just get supplies based on appearance. Coarse paper can ruin brush tips, and the wrong paper can cause ink to bleed. Ask your instructor or supplier what materials work together before you buy a complete kit.

Build Related Group Letters.

As you gain more control of individual strokes, begin forming letters.

Instead of practising the alphabet from A to Z, group similar letter movements together. In many modern Latin scripts, practicing the oval-based letters together helps you see their common structure.

Use guidelines for letter height and for alignment. Compare your work to a trusted source and correct one thing at a time.

For instance, if your letters aren’t all the same height, focus on hitting the guidelines. If your ovals are uneven, go back to practicing ovals before you add more complicated words.

Modern scripts often have a useful base of lowercase letters. Slowly add capitals, especially decorative forms that require more space and control.

Move from Letters to Words and Spacing

Single letters can be nice, but a whole word can still feel off. That’s where spacing works.

Begin with short words, names and simple greetings. Notice the open areas between the letters; don't attempt to leave an even measured space everywhere.

A round letter makes a different visual space than a narrow letter. You want a nice even rhythm all the way through the word.

Parts of strokes can be done. In calligraphy you don’t have to write an entire word at once; you just lift and move the pen.
