How to Draw Faces: A Beginner's Guide to Facial Proportions – Build the Foundation for Realistic Portraits

Drawing faces is one of the most exciting and rewarding skills an artist can learn. Whether you want to draw realistic portraits, character illustrations from animation and film, fashion sketches for clothing design, or digital artworks created on a tablet or computer, first grasping the core proportions of the face is the first step to creating accurate and compelling works.

Many beginners get stuck here and feel anxious: they pick up a pen and immediately fixate on refining details of individual features like the eyes and nose without first engraving the overall structure of the face into their minds. By the end, they always feel something is wrong but cannot put their finger on the problem. In fact, as long as you find easy-to-understand and reliable methods and keep practicing with targeted efforts, anyone can build the confidence to draw faces with ease.

At Learners Pod in Dubai, the drawing courses use a clear, coherent, step-by-step teaching method to help beginners build a solid fine arts foundation.

Whether you are looking for portrait-specific drawing classes, pencil drawing courses, beginner fine arts classes that start from scratch, or one-on-one private drawing lessons locally in Dubai, learning from a professional teacher will not only help you get started faster but also make the entire process of learning to draw far more enjoyable, so you won’t practice alone, grow more frustrated, and end up discouraged.

Understand the Basic Structure

Before you add small details like eyes, nose, and lips, you must first set the complete shape of the entire head—this step is especially critical.

Almost all beginner-oriented drawing courses start by teaching students to draw a few simple guidelines, which divide the face into evenly sized sections, so there are no empty gaps on one side or crowded space on the other.

With these basic guidelines, you can place each facial feature in the correct position while preserving the natural proportions and symmetry of the face, so the drawn face will not look awkward, and you won’t run into problems like eyes skewed to one side or an overly long nose.

Once you have mastered this basic facial structure, your accuracy will improve greatly when drawing faces of different shapes, ages, and expressions, and you won’t feel lost when switching to a new face.

Position the Facial Features Correctly

One of the biggest hurdles beginners face when drawing is placing features like the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears in the right positions.

Only by mastering facial proportions can you draw coordinated, natural, realistic portraits that are not lopsided or distorted, to the point that you cannot even recognize the drawing as a human face.

Spend time studying the spacing, alignment, and interrelationships between all facial features; with enough practice, you can develop a sharp eye for observation, and every portrait you draw thereafter will be better than the last, without repeating mistakes in the same places.

Professional portrait drawing courses in Dubai will first teach these core skills thoroughly before moving on to advanced shading and detail rendering. They will not jump into difficult content right away, which would confuse beginners.
